Call for Applications Editor-in-Chief

Thieme Group and the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) are seeking a distinguished and proactive academic leader to serve as the next Editor-in-Chief of our prestigious and high impact journal, Endoscopy.

The new Editor-in-Chief will officially begin their role starting January 1, 2026.  The term will be for a 3-year term with the possibility of an additional 3-year renewal. This is a unique opportunity to shape the journal's future and continue its legacy of excellence in scientific publications and in advancing medical knowledge in gastrointestinal endoscopy.

About the Role
The Editor-in-Chief will oversee all aspects of the journal’s editorial process, ensuring the highest standards of scholarly integrity, innovation, and impact. Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring the overall scientific quality in accordance with the scope and development strategy of the journal in alignment with the publisher.
  • Leading the editorial board and managing the peer review process using our designated editorial system in collaboration with the Editorial Office.
  • Upholding and enhancing the journal’s reputation within the global GI endoscopy and related fields and research communities.
  • Collaborating effectively with ESGE, the journal’s community, and Thieme representatives.
  • Chairing editorial meetings and actively engaging in discussions about the journal's strategic direction.
  • Driving submissions, identifying key trends, and fostering impactful content, including our e-Video series.
  • Supporting the promotion of the journal.
  • Being a co-opted, non-voting member of the ESGE Governing Board.

The ideal candidate(s) will be:

  • A globally recognised expert in the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy
  • Well-connected within the medical research and academic communities
  • Aware of the close cooperation of ESGE and Endoscopy as the “official organ” of the society.
  • Experienced in editorial roles, with a deep understanding of peer review processes, quality assurance, research integrity and editorial independence.
  • A visionary and collaborative leader who is thrilled by the opportunity to develop and advance Endoscopy even further.
  • An excellent communicator, fluent in English who knows how to handle critical situations with diplomacy.

The newly named Editor-in-Chief will work closely with the existing Editor-in-Chief,  Co-Editors and Editorial Board during the transition and should begin to initiate their vision for the board structure under their leadership.

We are open to applications from co-applicants (applying together as a team) who will serve as Co-Editors-in-Chief.


The closing date for application is 31st March 2025. Applications will be reviewed by a search committee comprising of representatives from ESGE and Thieme Group. Selected applicants will be invited to interview during May 2025.

Applications must comprise:

  • Your CV.
  • A letter of motivation (max. 2 pages) that includes the applicant’s vision for the journal and proposed editorial team structure under their leadership.
  • 3 letters of reference.

Applications will be reviewed by a search committee comprised of ESGE representatives and staff from Thieme. Before applying, applicants should consider whether they will be able to commit the necessary amount of time to this position. This point should also be addressed with their Chief of Division, hospital and/or university.
